Google Search's AI-generated summary shown at the top of results, answering the query directly while citing multiple sources. Being cited in it is a new visibility surface.

Google’s official documentation states that no special optimization is required for AI Overviews — standard search best practices (crawlability, helpful content) apply. For Google’s AI features, good SEO is good GEO.
That said, citation selection does not perfectly mirror classic rankings; citations from pages outside the top results are regularly observed. As on other AI platforms, self-contained, sourced passages that work as standalone answers are the ones that get cited.
