When AI references a specific page or domain as the basis of its answer and presents it as a source. The AI-search equivalent of ranking — the central KPI of GEO.

Notes

There are two layers: a mention is your brand name appearing in the answer text; a citation is your URL being referenced as a source. Measuring both separately reveals states like “the name is known but our site is never used as a source”.

Citation selection does not perfectly mirror classic rankings. Self-contained passages that work as standalone answers, sourced statistics and comparison tables are the formats that get cited.
