When AI Overviews or chat answers resolve the question, users do not follow links. As this normalizes, traffic becomes an incomplete success metric.

That does not make content pointless: even without the click, who gets recommended and how they are described inside the answer is still determined by content. The surface of exposure moved from the destination page into the answer itself.
